Maiden roughs up South

The South Caldwell Spartans dropped to 2-2 on the season after suffering a 38-14 loss to Maiden on Friday in Sawmills.

"We're going to evaluate our players and continue to practice and get better," South head coach Butch Carter said. "I thought we ran the ball and played better defense in the second half. It's time to roll up our sleeves and get ready for our first conference game."

South received the opening kickoff and turned the ball over on an interception just its fifth play from scrimmage. The interception was one of three turnovers on the day for the Spartans. Following the interception, Maiden took just five plays to score. Xzavion Huff scored on a six-yard run to give the Blue Devils a quick 7-0 lead.

Maiden (4-0) struck again on its very next possession. Tony Hernandez hit a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.

After the Spartans second punt of the day, the Blue Devils found the end zone again, this time on a 13-yard pass from Jake McRee to Kyle Kelly to make the score 17-0 early in the second quarter.

On the ensuing South possession, the Spartans turned the ball over once again on the third play of the drive. Maiden capitalized on the turnover with a 20-yard strike from McRee to Justus Woods to take a 24-0 advantage with 6:16 remaining in the first half.

The Spartans finally got on the board with 2:40 left in the half on a two-yard run by quarterback Trevar Soles. However, Maiden fired right back when McRee threw his third touchdown of the day, this one to T.J. Vick from 27 yards out. The Blue Devils went into the half with a commanding 31-7 lead.

In the fourth quarter, McRee threw his fourth touchdown of the day. He hooked up with Kelly for the second time on a 53-yard touchdown early in the fourth.

The Spartans scored their only other touchdown with 3:38 to play in the game. Mason Sides scored on a run from three yards out.

Maiden was the final non-conference of the season for the Spartans. South Caldwell will travel to Hibriten next Friday to play for the Caldwell County championship.
