South, Hibriten place first and second
The South Caldwell boys' track and field team earned a first place finish in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet on Wednesday in Sawmills.
The Spartans finished with a total of 70 points, followed closely by Hibriten in second with 68 points. Also at the meet, Hickory took third place with 66 points and St. Stephens finished fourth with 56 points.
On the girls' side, Hickory won with 89 points, while St. Stephens claimed second with 82 points. South Caldwell finished in third and Hibriten in fourth with 60 and eight points respectively.
In the track portion of the event, South Caldwell had four individual winners and two relay victories. Dylan Mathewson claimed first place in both the 1600 and 3200 Meter races, while Will Rice won the 800 Meter event. BreAna Hoyle was the South girls' runner to win an individual event with a first place finish in the 300 Meter Hurdles. The Spartans also got two relay victories in the boys' 4x800 Meters and 4x200 Meters.
One of the more impressive races for the Spartans was the boys' 800 Meters. While Rice won the event, Alex Craig took second and Jake Hall took third, earning South 13 of the possible 16 points.
On the girls' side, Hoyle scored a second place finish in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Mikayla Poulter earned a third place finish in the 1600 Meter race.
For the Hibriten boys' team, Tori Smith claimed two individual victories in the 200 Meter and 400 Meter Dashes, while earning second in the 100 Meter Dash. Braxton Cline and Trey Ellis also showed well for the Panthers. Cline place third in the 1600 Meters and Ellis took third in the 110 Meter Hurdles.
On the girls' side, Destiny Chapman had the best finish for the Panthers with a fourth place finish in the 100 Meter Dash.
In the field events, South Caldwell had two individual winners in Victoria Friel and Julia Bolick. Friel won the girls' Shot Put and Bolick won the girls' Triple Jump. In fact, the Spartans claimed the top three spots in the Triple Jump with Lauren Arrington taking second and Priscilla Bell placed third. Bolick also earned a second place finish in the Long Jump and Arrington placed second in the High Jump. Claire Stoudemire added a third place finish in the Discus Throw.
For the South boys', Gavin Reed placed second in the Pole Vault. Alex Pennington earned third place in the Discus Throw.
For Hibriten, Adam Stephens claimed a victory in the Triple Jump and a second place finish in the long jump. Ben Dacus, Daquan Suddreth and Mark Wilson also showed well. Dacus took second in the Pole Vault, while Wilson placed second in the Discus Throw. Suddreth claimed third in the Shot Put.
South Caldwell will next race at the Bunker Hill Invitational on Saturday, April 6. Hibriten will host the Porter Relays on Monday, April 15.
