The West Caldwell wrestling team picked up two victories over Maiden and North Wilkes on Tuesday in Gamewell.
The Warriors defeated Maiden 44-18 and North Wilkes 51-18. The win over Maiden puts West at 4-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic Conference.
The match against Maiden was much closer than what the score portrays. The score was just 20-18 in favor of West with four matches to go. However, the Warriors won all four of them, two of which came by forfeit. There were only four total pins in the match. The rest of the bouts went the distance and were decided by points.
"There were two or three matches that could have gone the other way," said West head coach Arex Crooke. "The work we put in at practice puts us in position to win these tough, tight battles."
West won nine of the matches in all. Guillermo Solis (220), Teddy Bolick (285) and Nathaniel Kale (152) all pinned their opponents. Grayson Morgan (120) opened the match with an overtime victory over Eric Rivera. Meanwhile, Jacob Houck (126), David Denison (138) and Caleb Wooten (182) all won by decisions. Michael Lowe (106) and Grant Barnette (113) both won by forfeit.
"Grayson Morgan won a tough match at 126 and Kale came up with an enormous pin at 152," Crooke said. "There were a couple matches that could have gone either way and we were fortunate enough that they went our way."
In the match against North Wilkes, the Warriors won all but three bouts. Denison, Kale, Solis and Morgan all won by pin fall. Malik Wiley (132) and Rakeem Spikes (160) picked up their first wins of the day. Wiley opened the match with an 8-2 victory over Austin Crane and Spikes defeated Randy Pruitt 5-3. Dustin Ward (195) also picked up his first win of the day with a 1-0 decision over Quinton Byrd. Wooten and Houck also won their matches by decisions. Kenneth Bentley (145) and Lowe both won by forfeit.
West Caldwell returns to action with a trip to Bandys on Friday.
