Spartans stun Hickory

South Caldwell's Jordyn Propst scored the game-winning basket on a tip-in with just under three seconds left to give the Spartans a 54-52 victory over Hickory on Senior Night on Tuesday in Sawmills.
"Hustle plays are the difference in big games," said Propst. "I knew if I hustled down the court I might be able to get a tip-in."
The Red Tornadoes tied the game at 52 piece on a basket by CJ Wardrick with 11 seconds left. South pushed the ball down the court and Trent Wakefield went up for the lay up and as the ball was coming out, Propst tipped it back in for the win.
Propst finished the game with a team-high 23 points.
"It's been a long time (since last win against Hickory)," said South head coach Lee Swanson. "These guys work hard and deserve something special. It wasn't perfect, but we fought."
The seniors for South include Propst, Jared Mask, Jordan Barker, Lance Minton, Devin Smith, Urel Cordoba and Danny Rivas.
Hickory opened up a big lead to start the game. Wardrick propelled the Red Tornadoes with 15 of the team's 17 points in the quarter. They led 17-4 in the final minute of the quarter. Barker helped the Spartans by converting a three-point play in the final seconds to pull back within 10.
The Spartans (7-11, 5-5 Northwestern 3A/4A) opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run, including a triple by Jordan Greene. Later in the half, Mask knocked down a three to cut the deficit to 21-20. Hickory led 32-28 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Red Tornadoes held a 38-33 advantage in the third, but the Spartans surged back with an 8-0 run to end the quarter and take the lead. South led 41-33 heading into the final stanza.
Hickory tied the game at 43-43 early in the fourth thanks to Zach Jarrett's five points. Reheim Connelly later hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Tornadoes a 48-45 lead. With 1:21 to play, Propst converted a three-point to give South a 50-48 lead. Moments later, Barker hit two free throws to take 52-50 lead. Wardrick then tied the game and Propst won it with the tip-in.
Barker finished the game with 14 points, while Mask added 11.
For Hickory, Wardrick scored a game-high 26 points. Jarrett and Connelly contributed with nine each.
The Spartans return to action on Friday with a trip to Boone to take on Watauga. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The South Caldwell girl's team dropped a 66-31 decision to Hickory on Senior Night on Tuesday in Sawmills.
South fought hard and competed with the Red Tornadoes for much of the first half. The Spartans actually led 11-7 in the first, helped by a Lindsey Potter 3-pointer. Potter is the only senior on the Spartans' roster. She finished with seven points.
Hickory then scored the final four to take a one point lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Hickory was able to extend its lead thanks to 13 points in the quarter by Yazmen Hannah. The Red Tornadoes led 31-20 at the half.
In the second half, Hickory proved to be too much for South, pulling out to a 54-25 advantage heading into the final stanza. South was unable to make a run, resulting in the loss.
Hannah scored a game-high 26 points. Erika Troutman added 17 and Danasia Witherspoon chipped in with 14.
South Caldwell was led by Courtney Wood, who finished with 12 points. Blake Gosnell added six.
The Spartans will take on Watauga on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Boone.
