Bumgarner mows down Freedom

South Caldwell's Madison Bumgarner hit a two-run home run, while also striking out 12 Freedom batters to lead the Spartans in a 3-1 victory over the Patriots on Tuesday in Sawmills.
"Madison played really well today," said South head coach Kristen Hobbs. "She came through for us on the mound and at the plate with the home run."
 In the first two innings, Bumgarner allowed no hits, while striking out six straight batters. However, Freedom broke through in the top of the third with an RBI double by Lauren Hasson. Paula Davis scored on the play after reaching on a single.
In the bottom of the third, Makayla Carver singled with one out to bring up Bumgarner. Bumgarner then hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
South threatened again in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Dotson singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Ashlin Walsh then layed down a bunt for an attempt at a squeeze play, but Dotson was thrown out at home.
The Spartans did strike again in the fifth inning. Carver led off with her third hit of the game with a single. After Carver stole second, Lainey Triplett hit an RBI single to left to give South a 3-1 advantage.
Freedom threatened in the sixth after getting two runners on base with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position. However, Bumgarner struck out a batter and got another batter to ground out to get out of the inning. In the seventh, Bumgarner struck out two batters and forced a groundout to preserve the victory for South.
Bumgarner picked up the win. She threw all seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out 12. Haley Bumgarner suffered the loss for Freedom. She threw six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out three.
On Monday, South played at Freedom and lost 3-1. Triplett scored the only run for the Spartans on a sacrifice fly by Mara Macchia.
South Caldwell returns to action on Monday with a trip to Mooresville. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
