Lincolnton handles West
The West Caldwell Warriors fell behind 21-0 early in the game and could not recover, resulting in a 48-21 loss to Lincolnton on Friday in Gamewell.
"I thought we didn't play such a bad game," West head coach Kyle Dunn said. "They're (Lincolnton) pretty stout over there. We're getting better but we still have a long way to go. We're going to get back to work and get ready for Bunker Hill."
After a three-and-out by the Warriors (1-9 overall, 0-6 Southern District 7 2A) to open the game, Lincolnton (7-3 overall, 5-1 SD-7) scored on just its fifth play on a one-yard run by Chavis Russell to give the Wolves a 6-0 lead. After another West punt, Zoauntarrious Brunt scored his first of three touchdowns on the day from three yards out to give Lincolnton a quick 13-0 advantage.
On the ensuing possession, Lincolnton's Quinlyn Harris picked off a pass deep in the Wolves' territory to keep West off the board. Two plays later, Jordon Easter hit Harris for a 90-yard pass and catch for a touchdown to extend the lead to 20-0.
The Warriors put together their most impressive drive of the game on the next possession. On a fourth down and seven, West called a fake punt and converted with a 33-yard pass from David Denison to Kyle Bennett. Later in the drive, the Warriors faced a fourth and goal from the 13 yard line and elected to go for the touchdown rather than kick the field goal. This time it was Dylan West who hit Titus Tucker on a slant pass for the score. The drive chewed up close to seven minutes off the clock. The Warriors trailed 20-6 at the break.
Lincolnton received the kickoff to open the third quarter and took just four plays to get back in the end zone. Brunt scored his second of the day on a 45-yard jaunt up the Lincolnton sideline.
After West turned the ball over on downs, Brunt struck again from 13-yards out to give the Wolves a 34-6 lead.
Later in the third, the Warriors put together a nine-play drive, covering 63 yards. Trustin Harper capped of the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 34-14.
On the ensuing possession, Lincolnton scored in just three plays. Easter scampered 23 yards for the touchdown. The Wolves struck again on their next possession. This time it was Tyshawn Smith scoring from one yard out to put the game out of reach at 48-14.
The Warriors added one more score in the fourth. West scored on a 15-yard run. The junior quarterback led the Warriors with 73 yards on 13 carries.
West Caldwell will conclude its 2013 campaign with a trip to Bunker Hill on Friday.
