South runs past Foard in shutout victory

The South Caldwell Spartans shut out the Tigers of Fred T. Foard in a controlling 36-0 victory at Foard Friday night.

A steady, successful rushing attack kept the Spartans in control of the ball, the clock and the game, with 429 yards on the ground from 51 attempts.

"It was a great team effort," Head Coach Butch Carter said. "We're getting better each week, on offense, defense and tackling. I'm extremely proud."

Carter said no one on the team was selfish Friday night, and with all the adversity the team has faced this season, he's proud that they have put themselves in a position to win against Watauga at home next week, which would secure the Spartans' number one 4A seed out of the conference going into the playoffs.

He said looking to next week, he asked the team to leave nothing on the field. "All I ask is that you give me the very best you have," Carter said, adding that the Spartans continue to do just that each week.

One fallback of the game was that pass protection broke down he said, with quarterback Trevar Soles only able to complete one pass for seven yards.

The South defense was stout throughout the game, allowing Foard quarterback Zander Toy to complete just nine of his 21 pass attempts for 87 yards. The Spartans also tackled much better than they have in recent weeks, allowing the Tigers to rush for just 52 yards all night.

From the very start, it was all business for the Spartans, who received the opening kick and wasted no time, as running back Nick Hudson broke the ice with the first touchdown on a nine-yard run the fourth play of the game.

Foard relied on Toy's arm to move the chains on their first possession, and on fourth and six converted a fake punt with a 10-yard run by Ryan Campbell, the first of two he would convert.

But it wouldn't be enough to get the Tigers in the end zone, as four plays later, they would punt back to the Spartans, who would eat up the rest of the first quarter on a 12-play drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Mason Sides as the first-quarter clock hit all zeros.

The second quarter was much of the same after starting slow with three-and-outs by each team, but the Spartans would capitalize on a Tiger fumble, relying on the consistency of their run game, setting up the 10-yard touchdown run by  quarterback Trevar Soles that would put South up 21-0, where the first half ended.

Foard started the third quarter with another three-and-out, and the Spartans wasted no time with two runs by Reed totaling 33 yards. Soles finished off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 10:11 left in the third, to put the Spartans up 27-0.

The Tigers strung together a moderately successful drive on the next possession, but were unable to capitalize, ending the drive with a punt that pinned the Spartans back at their own four-yard line.

But it wouldn't slow South down, as Cias Hawkins ran for 68 yards on two carries, followed by 20 yards from Adam Watson and a eight-yard run by Reed would get the Spartans in the end zone again, just five plays from their four-yard line, ending the third quarter with a 33-0 lead.

South controlled the ball for most of the fourth quarter, again relying heavily on the strong running game to get them in field goal range near the end of the game, and after a holding penalty backed the Spartans up, but it didn't matter for kicker Alex Burch, who put a 36-yard field goal through the uprights for the final score of the game, securing the 36-0 victory.

Next week, South faces Watauga High School at home at 7:30 p.m., the last game of the regular season.
