Panthers dominate St. Stephens

Oct. 05, 2013 @ 09:25 AM

The Hibriten Panthers traveled to Hickory to take on the St. Stephens Indians on Homecoming Night and returned home with a 47-14 victory. The Panthers are now 6-0 and 2-0 in the NW 3A/4A conference. St. Stephens falls to 0-6 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

Hibriten wasted no time in scoring. Quarterback Jacob Copper hit a wide open Hunter Penley on the first play of the game for a 69-yard touchdown. Luke Robson added the PAT.

The Panther defense held the Indians on their first possession, forcing a St. Stephens punt. Daquan Suddreth caught the punt at the Indian 49-yard line and found his way to the end zone for a Panther 14-0 lead at the 9:21 mark of the first quarter.

On the Indians’ next play, Copper intercepted a Spencer Brown pass and scampered to the end zone for a 55-yard touchdown. The PAT was wide left and the Panthers held a commanding 20-0 lead, only four and a half minutes into the game.

Hibriten was in the midst of a 10-play late in the first quarter, but fumble at the Indian 24-yard line. The Indians used nine plays and scored on a 34 yard pass from Brown to Marcus Payne.

The Panthers’ next touchdown came after a St. Stephens punt. This time Copper found Dontavis Caldwell for a 54-yard touchdown. Hibriten took a 26-7 lead to the locker room at halftime. The only downside to the first half was three Panther fumbles that were recovered by the Indians.

The Panthers scored twice in the third quarter. Devone Jones took a pitch around the left side for a 10-yard touchdown and Dontavis Caldwell took a pitch right for a 14-yard score. Hibriten’s final score in the fourth quarter was a 50-yard run by Jones.

Jones was the leading rusher with 71 yards on just three carries. Hibriten rushed for 249 yards on 27 carries. Copper completed five of his eight passes for 150 yards.

Hibriten returns to action next week for Homecoming as they take on Fred T. Foard.
