Johnson leads the way
Hibriten’s Tyler Johnson shot a round-low, 3-under 33 to lead the Panthers to a non-conference victory on Monday at Cedar Rock Country Club.
The Panthers finished with a team-score of 158. St. Stephens finished in second with a 163, Watauga in third at 166, Hickory fourth at 173 and South Caldwell took fifth at 180. The remaining three teams were Fred T. Foard (183), Patton (191) and Freedom (195).
“I thought the course played as easy as it was going to play today,” Hibriten head coach Larry Taylor. “We had to really good scores, but we really need to have five or six each time out. This is going to be a really competitive conference that a lot of teams have a chance to win.”
Behind Johnson’s 33, Christian Vanderford posted a 38, Dawson Walker shot a 43 and Matt Cannon shot a 44 to round up the total score. Ben Schmidlin and Mason Waters also competed in the event. Schmidlin shot a 45 and Waters shot a 47.
For South Caldwell, Zach Laws shot a team-best 40. Brady Childers was right behind him with a 41. The final two scores to round up the Spartans’ total were a 48 by Dalton Clark and a 51 by Mcauly Renfro. Mason Sheehan and Matthew Thibault also competed in the match. Sheehan shot a 54 and Thibault shot a 59.
“I told them before the match to just go out and have fun,” South head coach Jeff Thompson said. “I told them to take some chances and see what they could do.”
South Caldwell will next compete in a non-conference match West Caldwell today at Orchard Hills. The first Northwestern 3A/4A Conference match is currently scheduled for Thursday at Mimosa Hills. That is Hibriten’s next scheduled match.
