Caldwell's season comes to an end
Caldwell County Post 29 saw its season come to an end after falling 13-6 to Shelby Post 82 in the second round of the Area IV playoffs on Wednesday night at Keeter Stadium in Shelby.
Shelby wins the series 3-0 and advances to the Area IV semifinals to take on either Gastonia Post 23 or Union County Post 535.
Post 29 took a 5-1 lead in the game, before allowing 12 unanswered runs in the game. Out of the 13 Shelby runs, six of them were unearned. Nine of the 13 runs came with two outs in the inning.
Shelby took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bradley Evans hit a two-out double and scored on an RBI double by Nick Hastings.
Caldwell responded to take the lead with two runs in the second inning. Brett Macchia reached on an error to lead off the inning and John Austin followed with a single. Two batters later, Trent Wakefield an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1. Mason Biddix put the 29ers on top with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Post 29 added three more runs in the top of the third inning. Dylan Hamel and Taylor Powell each drew walks, and Austin was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Biddix later hit a bases-clearing double to extend the Caldwell lead to 5-1.
Shelby fired back with seven runs in the bottom of the third, six of which were unearned. Jay Seagle hit a three-run double in the inning, while Chandler Young and Dustin Jones each hit RBI singles. The other two runs scored on a Caldwell error.
Shelby added another run in the fifth and four in the seventh. In the fifth inning, Jackson Mims hit an RBI single. Then in the seventh, three RBI walks and a sacrifice fly extended the lead to 13-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dylan Hamel scored a run on a wild pitch to make the score 13-6. However, Post 29 would get no closer.
Alec Bivins picked up the win in relief for Shelby. He threw the final five and two-thirds innings and allowed no runs on just four hits.
