Panthers advance with shutout victory

The Hibriten Panthers advanced to the second round of the 3A state playoffs with a 41-0 shutout over the visiting Patton Panthers on Friday in Lenoir.

"I thought we played well in all three phases of the game tonight," Hibriten head coach Clay Lewis said. "First round games are always tough matchups for the higher seed. We knew it was going to be a battle since we just played them two weeks ago."

With the win, No. 5 Hibriten will travel to No. 4 Pisgah on Friday. Pisgah claimed a 31-14 victory over Hickory.

The Panthers took command right from the get-go with two touchdowns in just one minute and three seconds into the game. Devell Maxwell returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for the score. Hibriten then pulled some trickery with an onside kick and Daquan Suddreth recovered. Three plays later, quarterback Jacob Copper scored from one-yard out to put the home standing Panthers ahead 14-0.

After forcing Patton to a three-and-out, Hibriten put together a seven-play, 58-yard drive, capped off with a 30-yard touchdown run for the score. After Luke Robson's third PAT of the game, the Panthers led 21-0 with 4:35 to play in the first quarter.

Patton threatened on two separate occasions in the second quarter. After getting inside the Hibriten 25 yard line, J'Quan Taylor intercepted a Nick Conklin pass in the back of the end zone. On Patton's next possession, the offense once again drove into Hibriten territory, the Panthers came up with a big defensive stand and Patton turned it over on downs. Hibriten went into the half up 21-0, the same halftime score when these two teams met two weeks ago.

"We started out strong and kind of sputtered with some poor field position," Lewis said. "We had the same lead at halftime two weeks ago, which kind of concerned me a little. But we came out and executed in the second half and took care of the ball."

In the second half, Hibriten recovered a fumble on the opening Patton position and took advantage with a touchdown. The drive took just two plays and ended with a 22-yard touchdown run by TiShawn Daniels.

Hibriten added two more scores in the fourth quarter. Copper scored from five yards out and Dontavis Caldwell scored on a 20-yard run to cap the game off at 41-0.
