Panthers knocked out by Forestview

The Hibriten Panthers saw their season come to an end after dropping a 42-20 decision to No. 9 Forestview in the third round of the 3A state playoffs on Friday in Lenoir.

"I'm real proud of the kids," Hibriten head coach Clay Lewis said. "We may not have played as well as we wanted to, but we just ran into a better team tonight. These kids have done everything we have asked of them all season and they never quit. They (Forestview) were just the better team tonight."

The Panthers conclude their season with an overall record of 12-2. Forestview advances to the state semifinals to take on No. 2 Concord.

Both teams got off to a quick start with touchdowns on their first possession of the game. Hibriten received the opening kickoff and drove 69 yards on just six plays. Quarterback Jacob Copper scored from six yards out to give the Panther the early 7-0 lead. However, the touchdown would be the only points the Panthers scored until the final minute of the third quarter.

The Jaguars went on to score the next 35 points of the game. On their first possession, Forestview drove 67 yards on 10 plays, capped off with a one yard run by Jarvis Jeffries to tie the game at seven.

Following the opening touchdowns, the two teams combined for five straight three and outs. Forestview broke the streak early in the second quarter. Facing fourth and 15 from the Hibriten 35 yard line, quarterback Logan Bradley hit Mykelti Armstrong deep down the left sideline for the score.

On the ensuing possession, Hibriten converted on two fourth downs, including an 11-yard run by Drake Felder on a successful fake punt. However, the Panthers ultimately turned it over on downs at the Forestview 6 yard line. The Jaguars took a knee to end the half with a 14-7 lead.

Forestview received the kickoff to open the second half and drove 70 yards on eight plays. Moe Neal capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing Hibriten possession, Copper was picked off by Josh Dawkins to give the ball back to Forestview.

The Panthers later forced a fumble that Drake Honeycutt recovered in the end zone for a touchback. Hibriten would get just one first down before being forced to punt. The punt was returned all the way back to the Hibriten 38, and Forestview took just four plays to get back in the end zone. Bradley hit Caleb Mills for a 26-yard touchdown pass to extend the Jaguars lead to 28-7.

On just the second play of the next Hibriten possession, Forestview's Xzavier Davis scooped up a fumble and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown to ultimately put the game out of reach.

"We were still within striking distance until the defensive touchdown," Lewis said. "I felt like that was kind of the nail in the coffin."

Hibriten finally found some life on the offensive side of the ball on the next possession. Davone Jones scored from 68 yards out on the first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, Jamal Grier intercepted a pass that led to another Hibriten score to cut the deficit to 35-20. TiShawn Daniels scored on a one-yard run. However, the Panthers failed to recover the onside kick and the Jaguars added another touchdown on a five-yard run by Neal to make the score 42-20.

"We hard time getting anything going offensively," Lewis said. "They're a lot faster than what we're used to and we had a hard time blocking them anywhere on the field. We couldn't block them up front and we couldn't block them on the perimeter."
