South outlasts Wilkes Central

The South Caldwell’s Courtney Wood scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Spartans in a 56-43 victory over Wilkes Central on Wednesday in Sawmills.
Wilkes Central opened up a 6-2 lead early in the first, but the Spartans scored 18 of the next 20 points extending into the second quarter. South held a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.
In the second, Wood scored six points in the first minute and a half, including a 3-point play on the Spartans’ first possession. Later in the quarter, Caleigh Raby fired up a three to give South a 23-10 lead. Raby scored 10 points in the quarter. Salem Blair knocked down a triple for Wilkes Central to cut the lead to 26-17. The Spartans opened up a 34-19 advantage at the half.
The Eagles came out in the second half and went on an 11-0 run in the first two minutes to make it a four-point game. Wood made a wide-open layup for South to end the run. The Spartans settled things down and extended the lead back to ten. South led 42-32 heading into the final stanza.
The Spartans maintained a lead throughout the fourth and Wilkes Central never made any threat to tie or take the lead. South outscored the Eagles 14-11 in the fourth. Blake Gosnell hit four free throws late to help secure the victory.
Raby finished with 18 points for the Spartans and Lindsey Potter added six. Gosnell contributed with five points in the victory.

In the boy’ s game, Wilkes Central defeated the Spartans 63-44.
South got into foul trouble early and the Eagles took advantage. Wilkes Central made 21 free throws compared to just nine for the Spartans.
The Eagles held a tight 14-11 lead after the first quarter thanks to 3-pointers by Will Cornette and Austin Staley.
In the second quarter, Cornette scored nine of his game-high 18 points, including another triple. The Eagles went in to the half with a 32-24 advantage.
The second half only got worse for the Spartans. South managed just seven points in the third, falling behind by 17 for the start of the fourth quarter. The Spartans were unable to make a run, dropping their season finale.
Jared Mask led South with 15 points, while Jordyn Propst added nine.
