Panthers cruise past Foard

Oct. 12, 2013 @ 09:17 AM

On a night when Hibriten High celebrated its homecoming, the Panthers put points on the scoreboard early and at blinding speed, then cruised to a 49-7 victory over the visiting Fred T. Foard.

The Panthers took the opening kickoff to the Tiger 45-yard line and two plays later, Jacob Copper scampered into the end zone on a 40 yard QB keeper to put Hibriten on the board.

On the first offensive play for Foard, Hibriten’s TiShawn Daniels scooped up a Tiger fumble at their 14-yard line and ran it in to extend the Panther lead to 14-0.

On the next possession, the Tigers looked to climb out of the early hole when Alexander Toy found Eric Hampel at the Tiger 39, but Hampel was hit hard trying to extend the play and Panther Davone Jones recovered the fumble for the Panthers’ second takeaway of the first quarter.

On the ensuing play for the Panthers, it was Daniels blasting up the middle for 39 yards and the third Panther touchdown in the first five minutes of play.

After a Foard three and out, the Panthers took over in their own territory for the first time, but it did not slow the attack as Copper floated a 61-yard pass to Drake Felder down the right sideline to extend the Hibriten lead to 28-0.

The next series for Foard was its second three and out, and the Tiger punter could not handle the snap and the ball was collapsed on by Tiger Jackson Bess on their own 8-yard line. Two plays later, it was Copper once again on the keeper in the end zone to extend the Panther lead to 35-0 at the 2:52 mark of the first quarter.

The Hibriten Panthers ran nine offensive plays in the first quarter, six were ran in Tiger territory and four were touchdowns.

The Panthers continued their domination in the second as they marched 67 yards over five minutes and found the end zone once again.

On a 3rd and 10 from the Tiger 27, Copper dropped back to pass, luring the defensive line and linebackers of Foard out of the middle of the field. Copper dropped an inside screen pass to Zac Walker and as Walker turned, there was nothing but grass and the end zone in front of him. The touchdown extended the Hibriten lead to 42-0 with 7:25 to go before halftime.

The touchdown was Copper’s fourth on the night (two rushing, two passing).

The first Hibriten possession of the second half saw Daniels scamper 24 yards for his third touchdown of the night and 100 yards rushing.

Fred T. Foard did not back down their attack and found the end zone with 4:54 to go in the game as Deante Powell ran off right tackle from 10 yards out to put the Tigers on the board 49-7 and prevent the Panther shutout.

Coach Clay Lewis praised all facets of the game for the Panthers. “The defense executed the game plan well and made tackles by being where they should be all night,” Lewis said. “Our offensive line is a veteran group that’s been solid all season and consistent most every game.”

Coach Lewis also noted that the quick start was ideal for his troops. “A good start is key and to jump on an opponent shows things are going our way,” he said. “We have been fortunate to create big turnovers and played well on offense, defense and special teams.”

The Panthers sit atop of the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference and have a big matchup next week with the Watauga Pioneers in Boone.

“We have set a lot of goals this year and one is to be conference champions, but my biggest goal is to continue to make improvements every time we play,” Lewis said. “We have to take our next four games one at a time and continue to get better.”
