Warriors struggle at East Lincoln

Oct. 26, 2013 @ 09:43 AM

The East Lincoln Mustangs stampeded over the West Caldwell Warriors in a 68-7 rout in a game that the Mustangs controlled from the very start.

Mistakes by the Warriors only complimented the explosive offense of the Mustangs, led by quarterback Chaz Surratt, who threw for 349 yards and rushed for 81, scoring six touchdowns passing and two on the ground.

West received the opening kickoff, but after a quiet three-and-out by the Warriors, East Lincoln strung together a quick 7-play scoring drive that ended with Surratt running in the first score of the game from five yards out.

The Warrior’s second possession was another quick three-and-out, and East Lincoln struck again only five plays later, with a 44-yard pass from Surrat to Damisho Finandis, putting the Mustangs up 14-0 with six minutes to play in the first.

Then, after East kicked back to the Warriors, quarterback Dylan West threw an interception to Mustang linebacker Justin Rhodes, who would run it 29 yards back to the end zone. On the ensuing kickoff, Warrior tailback Haden Hagamen bobbles the reception, giving the ball right back to East Lincoln on the West’s 7-yard line. A quick pass from Surratt to running back Damarius Valentine, and the Mustangs put another touchdown on the board, and a missed extra point put East up 27-0, where the first quarter would end.

But the Mustangs didn’t slow down any, and on the first play of the second quarter, Surratt completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to Eric Thomas, and another three-and-out by West immediately followed, giving East the ball back, and in three plays, Surrat threw another touchdown pass, this one a 71-yard completion to Valentine, putting the Mustangs up 40-0 with 9:36 left in the first half.

This back-and-forth, touchdown and three-and-out cycle continued one more time, with Finandis running in the Mustang’s seventh touchdown from three yards out.

West was able to string together a 12-play drive that saw three first downs, but after the punt, the Mustang offense showed no mercy, as Surratt ran 74 yards for the touchdown on the first play of East’s possession, putting the score at 54-0 as the teams went to the locker rooms for halftime.

The second half was slower, but nonetheless controlled by the Mustangs, who scored again after only four plays from halftime, on a 24-yard pass from Chaz Surratt to brother Sage Surratt.

Another West mistake–a fumbled kick return by Hagaman–gave East the ball right back, where the Surratt brothers connected again on the first play of the drive for a 16-yard touchdown pass, the final score of the game for the Mustangs, going up on the Warriors 68-0.

West’s offense remained quiet in the third quarter, tallying two more three-and-outs before the quarter ended, and as the Mustangs began to conservatively run the ball with their second string, a punt early in the fourth gave the Warriors the ball back.

Fullback Marquel Jackson and tailback Herman Tate swapped carries in a 12-yard drive that finally put the Warriors in the end zone, breaking the goose egg on the scoreboard with just 1:15 left in the game.

The Mustangs would run out the clock to secure the dominating 68-7 win.

West Caldwell will look to bounce back next week at home against Lincolnton.
