Spartans claim second at conference championships

The South Caldwell boys' track team took second place at the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championships on Wednesday at Watauga High School in Boone.

The Spartans finished with a total of 141.83 points. Hibriten also competed in the event and took fourth place with 90.66 points. Watauga won the conference title with 177.66 points. In the girls' division, South Caldwell finished sixth with 50 points and Hibriten was seventh with 39.5 points. Watauga won with 178 points.

For the first time in school history, the South Caldwell boys swept the relay events. The team of Cameron Wright, Carl Guess, Kaymnon Maddox and Paul Neal won both the 4x100; Wright, Maddox, Neal and Jake Hall won the 4x200; Zane Geiser, Grant Trivett, Neal and Hall won the 4x400; and Geiser, Hall, Rhyan Stone and Dylan Mathewson won the 4x800. The Spartans also set school records in both the 4x100 and 4x200.

The South Boys had two other conference championships. Hall won the 400 Meter Dash and Mathewson won the 1600 Meter Run. Mathewson was also a runner up in the 3200 Meter Run.

For the girls, Lauren Arrington claimed a conference title in the High Jump. She also placed fourth in the 400 Meter Dash. Daniela Berry took fourth in the 800 Meter Run and Rachel Brown was fourth in the Pole Vault.

For the Hibriten boys, Daquan Suddreth won the conference title in both the Long Jump and the Shot Put. Ben Dacus finished second in the Pole Vault. Braxton Cline took second in the 800 Meter Run and third in the 1600 Meter Run. Conner Caldwell was fourth in the 100 Meter Dash, while Landon Petitt took fourth in the 110 Meter Hurdles. The team of Caldwell, Suddreth, David Clark and Monte Simmons also took third in the 4x100.

For the girls, Saidea Davenport finished third in the High Jump. Cheyenne Calloway took third in the Discus and fourth in the Shot Put. Julia Sherman took fourth in the Long Jump. The team of Davenport, Keonna Killian, Shawntai Gillenwater and Anjeleigh Harshaw took fourth in the 4x100 Meter Relay.
