The Caldwell County Sports Hall of Fame will add four new members next month during its 21st-annual induction ceremonies.

The HoF's Class of 2009 includes long-time Hibriten High girls basketball coach Wilford Beane, six-sport championship athlete Ted C. Crowe; collegiate All-American pitcher Gary E. Laws; and the late Jay Knight, a key figure in the area's semi-pro baseball history.

The induction ceremonies and dinner are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The four new inductees, selected by a panel from nominations made by the public, will bring to 86 the number of individuals to be honored by the county Sports Hall of Fame.

Each of the inductees or their families will receive a plaque, with a similar plaque going on display at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, which has housed the Caldwell County Sports Hall of Fame since its founding in 1989 by the county Rotary Club.

Tickets for the event are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the News-Topic office (123 Pennton Ave. SW), Lenoir Printing (401 Harper Ave. SW), and Caldwell County locations of the Bank of Granite.

For more information on tickets or nominating someone for possible induction into the Caldwell County Sports Hall of Fame, call Ron Beane at 728-9609, Jeff Joines at 758-9455, or Mac Robbins at 757-5571.
