Pedestrian struck, killed Tuesday night on Morganton Boulevard

A 62-year-old Lenoir man died Tuesday after he was struck by a vehicle on Morganton Boulevard.

According to reports, members of the Lenoir Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash shortly before 9:30 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered that James William Payne, of 229 Wilson St., Lenoir, had walked into the path of a 1997 Dodge pickup truck, driven by Leon Genwright, of Lenoir. Payne was transported to Caldwell Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Reports indicate that Genwright did not suffer any injuries in the crash and no charges have been filed.

Investigation into the crash the continues.
