South defeats Panthers; West falls to East Burke
Kashton Harshaw gave Hibriten the early lead with a 2-yard scoring run with 9 minutes 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Following the Harshaw conversion run it was 8-0 Panthers.
South answered after Nate Locke connected with Jordyn Propst on a 15-yard touchdown pass and after the Hayden Frank PAT, the Spartans trailed 8-7 with 10:20 to go in the first half.
Devin Potter put South up 14-8 with a 3-yard run and Frank's second PAT in the third quarter.
The Spartans increased the lead to 16-8 after a bad snap on a punt play for Hibriten was downed in the end zone for the safety.
Harshaw scored on a 60-yard run with 3:28 to go in the game, but the conversion run failed and South held the ball the rest of the game to preserve the win and improve to 5-2 overall.
East Burke 27 West Caldwell 8
Robbie McGee scored a pair of touchdowns and Matt Childers threw a pair of touchdown passes as East Burke cruised by West Caldwell at Gamewell.
No other information was available.
GIRLS TENNIS
Rain once again delayed the start of the Catawba Valley 2A conference tennis tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. this morning at Maiden High School.
VARSITY BOYS SOCCER Hibriten 3, Watauga 2
Jule Picton scored all three goals for Hibriten as the Panthers defeated Watauga 3-2 in Northwestern 3A-4A soccer action Thursday night in Boone.
Picton scored his first goal with 15 minutes remaining in the first half on an assist from Matt Meadlock to make it 1-0.
Picton put the Panthers up 2-0 after he scored his second goal on an assist from Sean Moretz just 45 seconds into the second half.
Watauga scored two unanswered goals to tie the match at 2-2 before Picton picked up his hat trick scoring his final goal of the night with 10 minutes remaining in the contest on an assist by Ryan Owens.
Austin Beard collected three saves to pick up the win. Hibriten improved to 10-5-2 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Fred T. Foard 3 South Caldwell 0
Fred T. Foard barely escaped with a 3-0 win over South Caldwell Thursday afternoon in Sawmills.
The Tigers won by scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-23 over the Spartans.
Four players finished with double-digit kills for South with Jessica Berry leading the team with 17.
Taylor Bentley followed with 16 while Jennifer Phillips and Catelyn Cook added 12 and 10, respectively.
Bentley and Kaylee Binegar added nine assists each with Breanna George adding five kills in the close loss.
Bentley also added five kills for South (1-11, 1-9).
JV VOLLEYBALL Fred T. Foard 2 South Caldwell 1
Fred T. Foard erased a 1-0 deficit to get the comeback win over South Caldwell.
The Tigers dropped the first game 25-18, but rebounded with a 25-21 win to even the match and took the final game 25-13 over the Spartans Thursday afternoon.
JV BOYS SOCCER Watauga 1, Hibriten 0
Watauga defetaed Hibriten 1-0 Thursday afternoon in junior varsity boys soccer in Boone.

Jake Copper scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for Hibriten District as the Panthers fell to East Alexander in middle school football action Thursday afternoon at Jeff Storie Memorial Stadium.

Craig Hall scored a pair of goals as Hudson advanced to the finals of the middle school soccer tournament with the shutout win.
Jonathan Nava assisted on both goals with Timmy Crump getting the win for the Hornets.

Mountain View Christian Academy lost the first game but came back to get a win over Christian Family Academy Thursday afternoon in the fourth round of the Carolina Christian Athletic Association Tournament in Granite Falls.
Mt. View dropped the first game 27-25, but rebounded with 25-21 and 15-7 wins to advance.
Heritage Christian will meet Tabernacle Christian this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with the loser to meet Mt. View.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL CCAA Tournament Mt. View Christian 2 Heritage Christian 1
Mountain View Christian Academy defeated Heritage Christian School 2-1 to advance in the fourth round of the Carolina Christian Athletic Association Tournament Thursday afternoon.
Mt. View won the first game 25-21 before Heritage answered with a 25-12 win in the second game. Mt. View won the final game 15-9 to advance.
Mt. View advances to play Christian Family Academy this afternoon at Harris Chapel Christian academy gymnasium.
The loser of that match will next meet Heritage Christian later this afternoon.
