A Lenoir woman was killed Thursday night when the motorcycle she was riding collided with a van near Smith Crossroads in Lenoir.

According to the crash report from Lenoir Police Department, 36-year-old Jessica Emily Ormand, of 1206 Weaver Court, was riding a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle. Ormand made a right off U.S. 321 on the exit ramp at Smith Crossroads and was heading east on Wilkesboro Boulevard around 7:45 p.m.

A Dodge van driven by Kimberly Prestwood traveling west on Wilkesboro Boulevard toward the crossroads was attempting to make a left turn into the parking lot of the Lenoir Crossing shopping center.

The motorcycle and van collided in the eastbound lanes of Wilkesboro Boulevard, and Ormand died at the scene.

Prestwood was transported by Caldwell County EMS to Caldwell Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Sgt. Allen Lawrence of the LPD traffic division said investigators are not sure what caused the motorcycle and van to collide, but drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors.

“We don’t know what caused the crash at this point; it may take a while to figure that out,” Lawrence said, adding that investigators are continuing to look into the case and gather witness statements to help determine the reason for the deadly collision.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The fatality is the 12th on Caldwell County roads this year, and it is the fifth investigated by Lenoir Police Department – two of them this month. Two of those fatalities have involved motorcycles.

Jessica was a dear friend of mine, we were in the Navy together. I hope her son Isaac knows how much his Mom loved him and I hope that he's being well taken care of now. RIP Jess you will forever be missed.
