David Starnes

David E. Starnes, 56, of Powder Point Drive, Hickory, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in Brunswick County, N.C.

He was born Feb. 10, 1953, in Caldwell County to the late John H. Starnes and Rosalia Pellegrini Starnes.

Mr. Starnes was founder and the Firm Director for David E. Starnes, CPA, PLLC, in Granite Falls. He maintained a standard of excellence in serving the needs of his clients with the utmost integrity and professionalism, establishing strong, lasting relationships.

David was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Hickory and a past member of Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls, where he served in various leadership roles within the church. He was active in his community. He was a member of the board of directors of the RBC Bank in Granite Falls, serving on the bank’s community foundation. He was also a member of the executive board of the Lake Hickory Country Club. He was a past member of the board of trustees of the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute and for many years was a volunteer coach at Granite Falls Recreation Center.

He graduated from Hibriten High School in Lenoir and from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Ram’s Club and an avid Tar Heels fan, golfer and photographer.

A loving and devoted husband and father, David is survived by his wife of 36 years Mrs. Sandra Greene Starnes of the home; one son, Matthew J. Starnes and wife Angel of Hickory; one daughter, Megan C. Starnes of Huntersville; one brother, Henry Starnes and wife Lisa of Granite Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Mavis Barlowe and husband Johnny, and Mrs. Anita Hartso and husband Cecil, both of Lenoir; aunt Maud Grinarmel and husband Ed of Lenoir; uncle, Gualtiero Pellegrini and wife Iria; and aunt, Lara Raffaeta of Forte de Marmi, Italy; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and innumerable friends.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert H. Shoffner officiating and Pastor Terrell Long as assisting minister.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the “Holy Trinity Church Endowment Fund” at P.O. Box 9580 Hickory, NC 28603-9580.

Margaret Setzer

Margaret “Margie” Smith Setzer, 57, died Nov. 1. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh UMC in Lenoir. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at Sossoman Funeral Home.

Phyllis Bonelli

Phyllis Irene Bonelli, 74, of Granite Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at her residence. She was born Feb. 26, 1935, in Clackamas County, Ore. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Dock Lackey

Dock Samuel Lackey, 81, of Lenoir, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Lenoir HealthCare Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
