Four players from West Caldwell High's boys soccer team have been named to the Catawba Valley 2A all-conference team, league officials announced Wdednesday.

Warriors players Gabriel Tobias, Neffy Castro, Tony Garcia and Melvin Yang were among the 23 players picked for the all-CV2A team.

Draughn, which won the conference title with a 12-1-1 record (15-8-2 overall), led the all-conference selections with five players.

In addition, Wildcats head coach Josh Martin was named the league's coach of the year.

South Iredell and Newton-Conover also had four players apiece named all-conference, with the Red Devils' Zach Mellon being named the league's player of the year.

Under head coach Thomas Clark, West Caldwell finished third in the conference standings at 8-3-2 (9-7-2 overall) and made it to the NCHSAA 2A playoffs, its first postseason appearance since 2004.

However, the Warriors lost to sixth-ranked Smoky Mountain 7-0 in their first-round game on Nov. 4.

Tobias, a sophomore forward, led West Caldwell in goals with 10. He also had five assists.

Castro, a junior sweeper, and Garcia, a sophomore goalkeeper, keyed a Warriors' defense that recorded three shutouts. Garcia had 127 saves in goal.

Yang, a senior, scored eight goals and led West with eight assists.

CCYFA to hold championship games Saturday at SCHS

The Caldwell County Youth Football Association will wrap up its 2009 season by holding championship games in all three divisions Saturday.

The games will be played at South Caldwell High School's Spartan Stadium.

In the first-second grade division, the South Caldwell Silver Spartans will play the West Caldwell Gold Warriors at 9:30 a.m. The Silver Spartans wrapped up its regular season atop the standings at 7-0-0, while the Gold Warriors were second at 5-1-1.

In the third-fourth grade division, the West Caldwell Gold Warriors face the Hudson Green Hornets at 11 a.m. The Gold Warriors went 8-0-0 during the regular season, while the Green Hornets finished 7-1-0.

In the fifth-sixth grade division, the Hudson Green Hornets play the South Caldwell Silver Spartans at 12:30 p.m. The Green Hornets went 8-0-0 during the regular season, while the Silver Spartans went 7-1-0.
