New initiative unveiling planned

Representatives from the City of Lenoir, Caldwell County Schools and Google are scheduled to come together at the Stage on the Square in downtown Lenoir on Tuesday, officially unveiling a new technology initiative.

The 10 a.m. event includes the official rollout of the free wireless Internet service, provided by Google, in much of the downtown area. In addition, the search and applications leader is has donated laptop computers to Caldwell County Schools for students’ use.

Scheduled to attend the meeting are Lenoir Mayor David Barlow and City Manager Lane Bailey, along with Caldwell County Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone, Google Operations Manager Tom Jacobik and students from William Lenoir Middle School.

“Ubiquitous access to the Internet is a requirement for success in education, work and life,” Google said in a statement. “Our region has not kept pace with this imperative. This initiative will help bridge the digital divide for our community.”
