Two players from West Caldwell's football team have been named to the Catawba Valley 2A all-conference team, league officials announced Monday night.

John Gilliam, a senior lineman, and junior receiver Tylor Witherspoon were among the 47 players on the all-conference squad, picked by the league's head coaches.

League champion Bandys and Newton-Conover, which advanced to the state 2AA championship game, each had 10 players named all-conference, and the teams split the major individual awards.

The Trojans' Kyle Houser was named the league's offensive player of the year, and head coach Randy Lowman was named the CV2A's coach of the year. The Red Devils' Jordon Gibbs was picked as the league's defensive player of the year, and Spencer Linquist was named special teams player of the year.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

The county's three high school swim teams will face off today at the Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center with more than just trophies and medals on the line.

Today's Caldwell County championships -- matching Hibriten, South Caldwell and West Caldwell -- will also raise funds to help a needy family designated by each of the schools.

The meet begins at 6 p.m., with warm-ups scheduled for 5 p.m. A Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Admission to the meet is $5 per person, with the public also asked to bring canned items, clothing or cash to donate.

MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING Granite Falls Middle 60 Gamewell Middle 35

Granite Falls Middle's wrestling team won 10 of 16 matches Monday to beat Gamewell Middle 60-35 in a Northwestern Conference match in Granite Falls.

All 10 of Granite Falls' (5-2) wins came by pinfall, while five of Gamewell's (3-4) six wins came on pins.

East Alexander 65 Hudson Middle 28

Hudson Middle's wrestling team dropped a 65-28 Northwestern Conference decision to undefeated East Alexander Middle on Monday afternoon in Taylorsville.

East Alexander (7-0) won 11 of 16 matches, all but one coming by pinfall. All five of Hudson Middle's (0-7) wins came on pins.

BOYS BASKETBALL Granite Falls Middle 36 Gamewell Middle 22

Granite Falls Middle's boys basketball team rolled to a 36-22 Northwestern Conference victory over Gamewell Middle on Monday afternoon in Gamewell.

Ryan Grainger scored 11 points and Trent Wakefield added 10 for Granite Falls (5-4, 4-3), which led 17-6 at the half.

Trevor Beane scored 10 points for Gamewell.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Granite Falls Middle 28 Gamewell Middle 11

Granite Falls Middle's girls basketball team crushed host Gamewell Middle 28-11 in a Northwestern Conference game Monday in Gamewell.
