Obituaries for Dec. 16, 2009
Fred Larue McMillan Jr., 88, of Circle Drive, Lenoir, died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
He was born July 18, 1921 in Caldwell County to the late Fred Larue McMillan Sr. and Ruth Johnson McMillan.
Mr. McMillan was retired from Bernhardt Furniture and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willena "Penny" Pendergrass McMillan of the home; two sons, Jeffrey E. McMillan and wife Delores of Statesville and Patrick A. McMillan and wife Gail of Pfafftown, North Carolina; one daughter, Mrs. Freda Truesdell and husband Bob of Knoxville, Tennessee; one brother, Charles L. "Scamp" McMillan of Melbourne, Florida; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir conducted by the Rev. Robert Hinman and the Rev. Parker T. Williamson.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

MARVIN ELLIOTT
Marvin Edger Elliott, 64, of Newton died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory. He was born Aug. 22, 1945 in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late Walter L. STEWARD SANDERS
Mr. Steward Layfayette Sanders, 85, of the Darby Community, Ferguson, died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro.
Mr. Sanders was born November 17, 1924 in Wilkes County to Granville and Celia Church Sanders. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Surviving are one sister, Amelia "Melia" Adams, widow of Luther Adams of Buffalo Cove; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Sanders Family Cemetery in Ferguson with the Rev. Burl Jones officiating.
Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
ROBERT NELSON
Robert J. Nelson, 76, of Olympic Street, Hudson, died Friday, December 11, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
He was born September 25, 1933 in Caldwell County to the late John H. and Alice Robbins Nelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; Turner Nelson, Vernon Nelson, Charles Nelson and Stanley Nelson; and a son-in-law, Fred Hickam.
Mr. Nelson was retired from Kincaid Furniture and was a member of First Baptist Church of Hudson.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wilda Drum Nelson of the home; one son, Lowell R. Nelson and wife Janet of Charlotte; one daughter, Ms. Teresa Hickam of Lenoir; two brothers, John B. Nelson of Norfolk, Va. and Hubert Nelson of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Baker of Hickory; three grandchildren, Robert and James Nelson of Charlotte, and Quentin Hickam of Lenoir; and family friend and caregiver, Sherry Hawkins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. James Hamby. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

James Stewart Story, 67, of Lenoir died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Grace Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Pendry's Funeral Home and Crematory.
