Protect those gift purchases

Countless hours have been spent picking out that perfect gift and wrapping it just right. The last thing anyone wants is for someone to snatch those gifts from under the tree or inside the car, which is why area law enforcement officers are encouraging people to lock those presents away.

“It’s the same message we spread all year long, but it never hurts to remind people to not be a victim,” said Det. B.J. Fore, of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. “This time of year, people know that others are buying extra gifts and if it becomes a crime of opportunity, they will take advantage of it.”

So, what can people do to protect themselves? Hudson Police Chief David Greene said being smart and attentive are the keys. He said that he usually sees a spike in crimes related to unlocked cars because people are leaving valuable items in plain sight. He said that people need to remember to lock their cars - in the driveway, parking lot and garages - and to keep things hidden.

“People will steal what they can no matter the time of year,” Greene said. “I like to tell people that the same rules apply whether it is July or December. If your car wasn’t broken into in July, it probably was because you didn’t have your personal belongings out in plain sight. Don’t do that now, and you will deter the criminal activity.”

Fore agreed.

“People are going to take the path of least resistance to steal, so if you lock your doors and make it look like the house is lived in, most criminals will move on to somewhere else,” he said. “I like to tell people to change up their routine as much as possible and to keep the garage door closed at all times. If people are watching and waiting, they may wait until they see the garage door closed to know you aren’t home. If you keep the door closed at all times, you keep them guessing whether anyone is inside.”

Whether you are home or not, Fore said it is important to make the house look lived in. He said he tries to keep the lights on at all times and to keep sound in the house. He said he often leave the television or a talk radio station on.

“Take the time to protect you and your loved ones,” Fore said. “We want everyone to have a safe and joyful holiday season.”
