Shooting victim identified; suspect remains behind bars
According to police reports, Larry Eugene Kidd, 51, of 2774 Twin Meadow Drive, Hudson, was shot and killed shortly before noon Tuesday at a residence located at 1876 Guildwood Place, Lenoir. LPD officers had responded to an incomplete 911 call and discovered the deceased victim upon arrival.
The shooting suspect, 50-year-old Edward Carlton Anderson, was arrested without incident at the scene. He had an initial court appearance Wednesday morning and formally was charged with first-degree murder. Anderson is being held without bond at the Caldwell County Detention Center.
Anderson, who lived at the residence where the shooting took place, is scheduled to appear in Caldwell County District Court again on Jan. 11, 2010, for a probable cause hearing. His court-appointed attorney is W. Andrew Jennings, a former assistant district attorney for the 25th Judicial District.
LPD Investigations Commander Capt. Sid Pope said detectives within the department and members of the State Bureau of Investigation are continuing to conduct interviews and process crime scene data in order to gain additional information about the shooting and what led to it.
"It appears there was some type of altercation between the two," Pope said. "We're really not sure right now what it was over. We feel comfortable that we've got the shooter. That's why he is in jail."
Pope said he has not been able to determine if Kidd and Anderson are related. He confirmed, however, that Kidd was known to stay overnight at the Guildwood Place residence. He added that two other individuals were in the house at the time of the shooting, though they have not been charged with anything at this point.
The Guildwood Place residence, a beige brick single-level house with a covered carport, is listed as being owned by Judy A. Anderson, according to Caldwell County property tax records. However, Pope said Michael Anderson, the suspect's brother, has claimed to be the owner of the house.
Regarding the autopsy, Pope said it was scheduled to be performed on Wednesday, however, results will not be available for several weeks.
He also praised the department's handling of the incident.
"Our uniformed personnel, if not for their quick response and resolution, the apprehension of our suspect probably would not have happened," Pope said. "Their actions also preserved the crime scene. I'm really impressed with that."
Pope also credited the SBI, which provided three agents to assist with the investigation.
The homicide is the third in Caldwell County this year, the second investigated by Lenoir Police Department.
