Teen faces charges in fatal crash
Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Dwayne Holtsclaw, of 2490 Oak Leaf Lane, Lenoir, was arrested just after Christmas by Master Patrol Officer Marcus Hartley of the LPD Traffic Enforcement Unit and charged with five offenses related to a Dec. 17 crash on Nuway Circle that eventually claimed the life of Taylor Lace Lasha Coffey.
Coffey, a 13-year-old student at William Lenoir Middle School, died Dec. 22 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte as a result of injuries she suffered in the head-on collision that took place just before 6 p.m. Dec. 17.
A 1999 Chrysler Concorde driven by Caprice Alixie Isbell of Lenoir was traveling north on Nuway Circle the night of the collision.
According to the LPD investigation, Holtsclaw lost control of the 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse he was driving south on the city street and struck the Concorde head-on after going left of the center line. Speed is considered the primary factor that led to Holtsclaw losing control of his vehicle.
Coffey was one of five people in Holtsclaw’s vehicle. She was seated in the rear passenger seat of the car but not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. She was airlifted to CMC the night of the collision but died five days later due to her injuries.
A total of six people were transported to hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Isbell and her passenger were transported to Caldwell Memorial Hospital by Caldwell EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.
Four occupants of the Eclipse were transported by EMS to CMH because of their injuries.
Holtsclaw has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving to endanger, failing to wear a seat belt, failing to secure a passenger and driving left of center. He was released to the custody of his mother due to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Investigation of the fatal wreck is continuing.
The fatality was the 16th on Caldwell County roads in 2009 and the sixth investigated by Lenoir Police Department.
