PREP ROUNDUP: Spartans go 1-3 in East Burke wrestling tournament

South Caldwell's wrestling team faced some stiff competition during Saturday's Adam Benson-Cavalier Classic dual-team tournament, droppng three out of four matches at East Burke High School in Ikard.

The Spartans (9-8) beat host team East Burke 48-36, but lost to three-time NCHSAA 2A dual-team tourney runner-up Newton-Conover 54-19, to West Lincoln 44-30 and to East Mecklenburg 43-33.

David Crouch was the only South wrestler to win in all four matches. The sophomore, who wrestled at 160 pounds, improved to 12-1 on the season with a pair of first-period pins -- over West Lincoln's Hayden Sutphin and East Meck's Rodney Huntley -- a 9-0 major decision over Newton-Conover's Terrell McCombs, and a forfeit in the East Burke match.

South's Cory Taber, wrestling at 119 pounds, won both of his matches, pinning West Lincoln's Josh Hall in the first period, then taking an 8-1 decision over Newton-Conover's Ivan Acevedo. He is now 7-4 on the season.

Devin Potter, the Spartans' regular starter at 171 pounds, wrestled just once Saturday, getting a second-period pin over East Meck's Ben Heidara. Potter is now 13-2 this season.
