PREP ROUNDUP: South boys go 3-0, girls 2-1 at 4-team swim meet

South Caldwell's boys swim team went 3-0 and the Spartans girls team took two of three in a four-school Northwestern 3A-4A meet Tuesday evening at the Hickory YMCA.

South's boys won eight of 11 individual events, and took decisive dual-team wins over Alexander Central (79-15), Fred T. Foard (66-28) and St. Stephens (67-26).

The Spartans' girls won just three individual events, but placed well enough in others to take dual-team wins over Alexander Central (72-17) and Foard (52-38). Their lone loss came against St. Stephens, 52-41.

Winning individual events for South's boys were Johnny Lok (200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke), Devin Abernathy (100 butterfly), Michael Santos (100 freestyle) and Nathan Diehl (100 breaststroke). The Spartans also had relay wins in 200 medley relay and 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Rachel Ponti (200 freestyle) and Amanda Bolick (50 freestyle) had event wins for South's girls, which also won the 200 freestyle relay.

* Hibriten's boys and girls swim teams split a pair of matches against Hickory and Watauga in a three-school Northwestern 3A-4A meet Tuesday evening at the Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The Panthers lost both dual-team matches against the Red Tornadoes, and took both from the visiting Pioneers.

Hibriten's boys won five of 11 individual events, with Kyle Hites taking two of those (the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke). Also winning for the Panthers were Gray Beane (50 freestyle), Mitch Vapniarek (100 butterfly) and Jake Washburn (100 freestyle).

Elizabeth Gantt posted the lone individual event win for the Panthers' girls, taking the 100 breastroke. Hibriten's girls also won the 200 freestyle relay.

WRESTLING

South Caldwell's wrestling team took a pair of nonconference dual-team matches over Shelby and Crest on Tuesday evening in Shelby.

The Spartans (11-8) beat host-team Shelby 63-15, then edged Crest 41-32.

Six South wrestlers -- Jake White (112 pounds), Corey Tabor (119), David Crouch (160), Devin Potter (171), Charlie Volz (189) and Grant Benham (215) -- each won twice during the dual-team matches.

MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING Hudson Middle 46 William Lenoir 37

Kody Wood won the final match of the day at 125 pounds with a pin over Edward Smith to give Hudson its first wrestling win of the season with a 46-37 triumph over William Lenoir Tuesday afternoon.

Hudson won eight out of 16 matches Tuesday, with seven coming by pinfall. By comparison, of William Lenoir's seven match wins, only three came on pins.
