Tuesday's Obituaries (Feb. 9)
Danny M. Courtney Sr. of 1824 Chestnut Drive, High Point, NC, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.
He was the son of the late Henry M. Courtney and Jennie Roderick Courtney and was the youngest of five children.
A native of Lenoir, N.C., he attended public schools in Caldwell County and worked as a sales clerk at Belk Department Store during high school and until 1949. In October 1939, he entered an apprentice program with the Bank of Lenoir. Except for military duty during World War II, he continued with the bank, being promoted to cashier and then to assistant vice president in 1958 at which time the Bank of Lenoir merged with the First Union National Bank of Charlotte.
On March 30, 1941, he married the love of his life, Doris Harward, who preceded him in death in 2003.
While living in Lenoir, Mr. Courtney was active in county government, having served for six consecutive years as a member of the Board of County Commissioners and two terms as representative of Caldwell County in the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh.
Civic activities in Caldwell County included serving as the president of the Lenoir Rotary Club, The Caldwell County United Appeal, treasurer of the American Red Cross, Director of Northwester North Carolina Development Association and a director of Lenoir Chamber of Commerce.
While living in Lenoir he and his family were active in the Littlejohn Methodist Church.
In 1962, the Courtney family moved to High Point, where Mr. Courtney helped establish an office of the Scottish bank. The Scottish Bank opened in April 1963 and merged with First Union National Bank the same year. He continued with the bank as vice president until his early retirement in December 1976.
Before Mr. Courtney could become accustomed to a life of leisure he was lured out of retirement by the High Point Merchants Association. He began a new career in January 1976 and continued as president until 2008.
In High Point he was active in the Rotary Club of High Point, serving as treasurer for 14 years, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow and receiving the “Service Above Self Award” in 1978. He was a member of the North Carolina Walking Horse Association where he and his Tennessee Walking Horse, “Magic of the South,” were known far and wide.
He was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, having served as a member of the Associate Board, member of the Official Board, chairman of the Commission on Missions, and president and secretary of the Adult Fellowship Class. In recent months, he particularly enjoyed his participation in the “Counting Team” at Wesley Memorial. He also volunteered for Mobile Meals delivery.
Survivors include a sister, Ruby Courtney of Lenoir; two sons, Henry H. Courtney of Washington D.C., and Grover R. Courtney and his wife Rená, of Lenoir; three grandchildren Danette R. Courtney, Danny M Courtney III and Angela M. Courtney;, and their mother, Wanda Courtney; two sisters-in-law, Era Courtney and Mary V. Guy; two nieces, Susan Barwell and Rebecca Tuttle; and a nephew, David Guy Jr. He also is survived by a special friend, Sharon Smith, who provided extraordinary business and personal support to Danny.
The family also would like to thank Lib Williams, who worked tirelessly, supporting the Courtney family at home.
A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 in the Sanctuary of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ashley Crowder Stanley officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at the Littlejohn Methodist Church in Lenoir, N.C., on Tuesday Feb. 9 at 11 am.
The family received friends in the Asbury Room of the church following the service.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Adult Fellowship Sunday school class and Rotarians.

Marshall Corpening
Mr. Marshall Sado Corpening, 68, of 612 Center St., Lenoir, N.C., died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
He was born to Malcolm Sado Corpening and Jessie Mae Propst Corpening of Lenoir, N.C. He was preceded in death by a son, Marshall Alexander Corpening. Jr.; and a sister, Agnes Mae Logan.
Mr. Corpening was retired from Jamie Towels with the state of New York as a maintenance worker for 32 years and member of the Firefighters of America. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was survived by a son, Russell Corpening of Charlottesville, Va.; two daughters, Toni Corpening of Bronx, N.Y., and Keyana Thomas Corpening of Newport News, Va.; fiancee, Marissa K. Patterson of Lenoir, N.C.; four brothers, John David Corpening (Roselynn), Clyde H. Corpening, William D. Corpening and Ernest J. Corpening, all of Lenoir, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at 2 p.m. at E.R. McGimpsey Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Norwood Sr. officiating. Burial will be private.
Family will be at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm and Jesse Mae Corpening, at 614 Prospect St. NW, Lenoir, N.C.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, from 1 to 1:55 p.m. at the chapel.

Nicholas D’Anna Mr. Nicholas James Nunzio D’Anna, 90, of Campground Road, Granite Falls, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced later by Mackie-High Funeral Home, which is serving the family of Mr. Nicholas James Nunzio D’Anna.
Jane Durham Jane Durham, 68, of Decatur, Ala., died Feb. 6, 2010, at Parkway Medical Center. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Gods Acre Cemetery in Winston-Salem, N.C. Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur, Ala., is handling the arrangements.
Michael Quigley
Mr. Michael Patrick Quigley, 84, of Mt. View Street, Lenoir, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at his residence.
He was born March 17, 1927, to the late William Quigley and Nellie Traub Quigley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, William “Bill” and Albert Quigley; a sister, Ruth Quigley.
Mr. Quigley was a retired veteran of the US Navy with 32 years of service. He served in three wars – WWII, Korea and Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Quigley was a member of the Fleet Reserve and was on destroyers and swift boats.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Edna Aileen Bowman Quigley of the home; his son, Danny Bowman and wife Deloris of Granite Falls; a granddaughter Alyssa Bowman; a step-granddaughter, Valerie “Shawn” Chapman; a step-great-granddaughter, Taylor Hardman; two sisters, Mary Mallizzo and Catherine Quigley; two nephews and a niece.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Mackie-High Funeral Home.
The funeral service will beat 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Mackie-High Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marion Poythress officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery with full military honors provided by DAV 84 and 6.
Pallbearers for Mr. Quigley will be John Crane, Tom Bailey, Nick Poe, Gifford Poe, Jeff Crane and Tim Yount.
Honorary pallbearers will by Mike Bowman, Larry Crane, David Poe, Charles Chapman, Robbie Quiley, Jack Murphy and Reggie Line.

Clinton Coffey
Clinton Coffey, 87, of Lenoir, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Gateway Nursing Home.
Mr. Coffey was born in Avery County to the late Thomas Newton Coffey and Ella Mae Loudermilk Coffey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Callie Smith Coffey; and a daughter, Sherry Coffey.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Smith and wife Elaine of Sugar Grove; daughters, Nancy Greer and husband Gary of Lenoir and Shelia Auton and husband Eddie of Rock Hill, S.C.; two grandchildren, Kelly Blinson of Charlotte and Reanna Smith of Raleigh.
A private graveside service will be held Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, with Gary Greer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Jeanette Hoyle Jeanette Coleman Hoyle, 70, of Lenoir, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
Mrs. Hoyle was born in Gastan County, Va., to the late Coey Coleman and Mabel Coleman Proffitt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Eugene Hoyle; brothers, Charlie and Jack Coleman; and sisters, Jean Culler and Rosalee Presnel.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gene Hoyle and Charles Randy Hoyle and his wife Teresa, both of Lenoir; two daughters, Teressa Gail Hoyle and Annette Hoyle Caldwell and her husband Dwayne, both of Lenoir; a brother, Roby Coleman and wife Delores of Reidsville; sisters, Lucille Paschal of Reidsville, Maggie Paschal and husband Joe of Reidsville, and Loye “Betty Ruth” Price of Greensboro.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Marsha Joyner and the Rev. Joe Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family received friends at Pendry’s Funeral Home Monday Feb. 8, 2010, from 6 until 8 p.m.

Mary Beaver
Mary Elizabeth King Beaver, 46, of Lenoir, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.
She was born June 17, 1963, in Caldwell County to the late Jim Triplett and Faye Barrier Bryant of Lenoir. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter Sarah Beaver; and one brother.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband Donnie Beaver of Lenoir; two sons, Jeff King and Adam King, both of Lenoir; one daughter, Heather King of Lenoir; one brother, Chris King of Lenoir; and one sister, Bonita King of High Shoals; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Shew officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Lawrence Winkler
Lawrence Fulton Winkler, 91, of Lenoir, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Caldwell County to the late Lawrence Rivers and Rosa Turner Winkler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Kirby Winkler; one brother, Ned J. Winkler; and seven sisters, Ollie Walsh, Jeannie Mae Wilson, Lizzie Lovins, Billie Cottrell, Betty Adkins, Susie Austin and Alma Reynolds.
Mr. Winkler was retired from Bernhardt Furniture and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Gary L. Winkler and wife Janet of Hudson; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Gilbert and husband Steve of Newton, Mrs. Kay Greene and husband Jerry of Hudson, and Mrs. Elaine Church and husband Larry of Granite Falls; four grandchildren, Adam Greene of Hudson, Michelle Gilbert of Dallas, N.C., Heather Johnston of Charlotte and Melanie Cline of Granite Falls; two great-grandsons, Jordan Cline and Tyler Cline, both of Granite Falls; two special nieces, Lorraine Minton and Sandy Winkler.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jerry Reeves and the Rev. Gill Larew. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Roger Dula, Adam Greene, Clay Cline, Charles Minton, Ricky Dula and J.E. Coffey.
