Former Shoney's to reopen under new name
A familiar sign that has loomed over Smith's Crossroads for more than 30 years comes down today.
Since 1983, the Shoney's restaurant on Wilkesboro Boulevard near Smith Crossroads has been a destination for area diners. On Sunday, the restaurant served its last meal as a Shoney's, and it will reopen at 4 p.m. today as Bud's Diner.
The Shoney's sign, perched atop a 20-feet tall pole, is due to come down this morning.
Charlotte-based Bud Foods has owned the restaurant since 1999. Tracy Foust, operating officer for Bud Foods, said his company dropped the Shoney's franchise for financial reasons.
"Shoney's was moving into a direction we really didn't want to go," Foust said. He declined to elaborate.
The restaurant has been undergoing renovations in preparation for today's scheduled 4 p.m. opening.
The menu will be similar to Shoney's, but with some changes in the food, Foust said.
"We will offer nice dining and great food at a reasonable price," he said.
The restaurant will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
