Hibriten basketball coach Roger Burgess stepping down
Roger Burgess is stepping down as the head men's basketball coach at Hibriten High School, the school announced Friday.
Athletic director Chuck Cannon said Burgess, who will remain with the school as a physical education instructor, had been considering the move for a while. The two discussed it last year.
"After you've done it so long, it gets harder and harder and harder every year," Cannon said. "He decided maybe it's time for someone else to have a shot."
Burgess could not be reached for comment Friday. Burgess first came to Hibriten in 2002 as the head of the women's basketball team. When he took over the men's team in 2003, it was in need of a new direction.
"We were struggling, not making the playoffs," Cannon said.
Burgess got things turned around quickly. During his tenure as head coach, his teams qualified for the playoffs every season through 2011. The highlight was an appearance in the state Final Four in 2010.
Cannon said a search for a new coach is under way, and he hopes to have an announcement by the first of April.
