Ronald Rice

Ronald Clifton Rice, age 65 of Hudson passed away at Caldwell Hospice's Pine Mt. facility on Friday, March 15, 2013.

Born October 1, 1947 to the late Lewis Eugene and Mary Ross Rice, he was of the Baptist faith, and loved attending Glory Land Baptist Church in Hildebran. He was an avid pool player and enjoyed table games. Hewasretired from Tri Star Trucking, and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, Viet Nam Era.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by two brothers, Mike and Tim Rice, and the mother of his children, Elveta Rice.

He is survived by his wife, whom he called "the love of his life", Shirley Wilcox Rice, of the home. One daughter Ronda Yelton [Junior], of Granite Falls. Step-children:  Gary Greene [Teresa], of Lenoir and Lisa Pritchard [Ronald] of Hudson. Grandchildren, Amanda Deal [Allen], of Granite Falls and Joshua Yelton [Venessa], of Hickory. Step-grandchildren, Brooke, Cole, and Zach Bentley, Derek Hudson [Tara], Chelsea and Skylar Pritchard. Great grandchildren, Alexxis and Anabell Yelton, and Parker Deal. Step-great-grandchildren, Ender and Moxxie Hudson.

He also is survived by one sister - Brenda Bumgarner of Granite Falls, and two brothers; Joe Rice of Granite Falls and Mark Rice of Hickory.

Visitation will be held Sunday, afternoon, March 17, 2013 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville, with funeral services on Monday, March 18, 2013  at 3:00 p.m. at Glory Land Baptist Church in Hildebran. The body will lie in state thirty minutes before the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the Dudley Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Pallbearers are Wesley, Zach and Michael Rice, Ashton Burgess, Raymond and Bradley McCullough.

Patsy Wyke

Patsy Swanson Wyke, age 88, of Windhurst St., Lenoir, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at College Pines Nursing Home.  She was born August 6, 1924 in Caldwell County to the late Jessie and Rosie Austin Swanson.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Guthrie, Clarence, and Babe Swanson; three sisters, Connie Huffman, Mozelle Casse, and Collene Wyke; and a grandson, Adam Wyke.

Mrs. Wyke was a dedicated Christian who loved the Lord, her family, and grandchildren.  She was retired from Caldwell County Schools as a custodian and after retirement she took care of children in her home given that she had such a love and special place in her heart for children.

Survivors include three sons, Wayne S. Wyke and wife Linda, Danny L. Wyke and wife Shirleen, and Roger S. Wyke and wife Kathy; daughter, Retta Austin and husband Gary, all of Lenoir; seven grandchildren, Mark, April, Jason, Justin, Christie, Jared, and David; six great-grandchildren, Makayla, Dylan, Sarah, Jordan, Madison, and Samuel; and special friends, Dora Lee Caudle, Thelma Chester and Andrea.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 17, 2013 from 3:00-4:30 PM at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Nellie Shepherd

Nellie Rose Frye Shepherd, 88, of Longview died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Catawba County to the late James Perry and Etta Price Frye on August 12, 1924.  She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Penelope Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Marshall Shepherd, brothers Fred Price, Boyd, Floyd, Elmer, Charlie, Gaither (Buck), and Arthur Frye, sisters; Bertie England and Gladys Wilson.

Surviving are a son, William (Bill) Shepherd of Hickory, a daughter, Sandra (Sandy) and husband Jerry Kahill of Lenoir, three granddaughters, Michelle Shepherd of Utah, Sheena Shepherd of Lenoir and Stacey (Wes) Leatham of California, a step-granddaughter, Renee Detter (Rick) of Hickory, two grandsons, Kerry (Nikki) Kahill of Conover, Michael Kahill (Ailisa) of Lenoir, four great-grandsons, Hunter Turnmire, Connor, Aidan and Liam Kahill, three great-granddaughters, Brooklin, Abigail and Emma Kahill, two brothers-in-law, Wade and Robert Shepherd and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at Penelope Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 with the Rev. Don Ingle officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:30 PM Monday, March 18, 2013 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory.

Allan Helton

Mr. Allen Bruce Helton, age 61, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born in Caldwell County on October 9, 1951 to Charles R. “Sonny” Helton and Claydean “Deanie” Helton.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Hammond; son, Allen Helton, Jr.; daughter, Deana Holman and husband, Lee; brother, Charles “Tommy” Helton and wife, Anita; grandson, Alex Helton; granddaughter, Alexis Helton; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory forever.

A celebration of Allen’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service and Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 12:00 Noon with Reverend Carroll Fox and Reverend Sam Abee officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be:  Dayton Helton, Alex Helton, Todd Bumgarner, Barry Barnette, Justin Coffey, and Bradley Woodie. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 18, 2013 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.
